Chapter 12: Good Enough
She said I don't know if I've
ever been good enough
“Lots of stuff has been happening for you guys. You won some MTV Awards a couple of weeks ago, announced an upcoming world tour, you’ve got a new album coming out, and the big news… Ritchie you got married!” Rosie O’Donnell tapped her cards lightly on the desk as she looked over to the monitor feeding her cues. “I think we may have a picture to show…Don’t we? I think it’s coming up…there it is! There she is! Behind me on the monitor is Aliesa Montaine with the rest of Five at the European MTV Awards. As you might know Aliesa is also in the music biz. She’s such a cutie that Aliesa! We had her on the show a couple of months ago. And I’m sure everyone is thinking it…Ritchie you’re one lucky guy!” “I really am,” Ritchie replied gazing up at the screen, as the picture switched to a shot of Aliesa and he standing on the red carpet, before he met Rosie’s gaze. “So how did you two meet?” “At a party.” “So was it love at first sight?” Ritchie shook his head. “Actually…” Ritchie rubbed his hand along the side of his neck. “I can’t believe I’m going to admit this I’m never going to hear the end of this one from the other lads,” he said flushing looking at the other guys. “But uh… well the first time I met Aliesa she wouldn’t even talk to me.” He grinned sheepishly at the audience. Rosie gaped at him. “Really? She blew you off?” “When you say it like that you make it sound so pathetic.” “Cause it is!” Rosie teased. The other guys laughed. “But WOW I can’t believe that. Ritchie! You’re such a hottie. Honey if you came up to me I would have talked to you!” “If only you were at this party!” Ritchie said a smile playing on his lips. “I know! Where was I? Probably doing this show! I need some time off! I’m missing out here. But hey! It all turned out right in the end because apparently she noticed you later on.” “Yeah she succumbed to my charms eventually,” Ritchie joked. “Even after the initial rejection you still went for it. Most guys would have just walked away. What made you go back?” Ritchie grinned bashfully. “Well this is going to sound awful… because it makes me sound full of myself.” His eyes lowered. “Honestly what drew me to her in the first place was that she was actually the only single woman in the room who didn’t try to get my attention,” he admitted timidly. “So I was determined…” “Oh the GUY thing.” Rosie cracked. “So what changed her mind and let her give you a chance?” “Well…” Ritchie started. Aliesa eyed him tiredly, swirling her drink in her hands. “I don’t date musicians. Nothing against you or anything but I’ve done that. It gets too complicated so I don’t do it anymore." “Is that what’s stopping you?” Ritchie smirked. She nodded. “Among other things.” “Well I’m not a musician.” “You’re not a musician?” She repeated in disbelief, raising her glass to her lips and sipping the drink unimpressed. “Because last time I checked you were.” “Nope. I’m not.” He grinned. “Didn’t you hear? I’m in a boyband.” Ritchie shrugged. “She spit out her drink at that, laughed, and after she calmed down she gave me her number. And well you know the rest…” He finished pointing at his wedding band. The audience gushed. Too bad that actually didn’t happen, Ritchie thought as he sat there in between Abs and Scott mugging for the camera. But what was one more lie to save their public image though anyway? Aliesa and he had told enough to last a lifetime. “I can’t believe she went for that!” Rosie interjected amongst the audience commotion. “Neither can we!” Scott said from his spot on the couch. “It was a horrible pick up line.” “Ritchie never was the smooth type,” Abs added regretfully. Ritchie pushed the two guys playfully. “It worked though. I got the girl didn’t I?” “Certainly did!” Rosie mused. “But all joking aside… I’m really happy for you two and I mean that. I’m not just saying it to get brownie points. I’m sincerely happy that you guys found each other. I know it’s hard to find someone in this business we’re in. I wish you both all the best.” “Thank you.” “According to my handy dandy cue cards taped to my desk. And they literally are TAPED to my desk.” Rosie said pointing to them. “You boys have a new album in the works. When is that getting released?” “We’re just cleaning up some tracks now and if everything goes according to plan it should be out in about two or three months.” J answered. “Well definitely looking forward to it and I know other people are as well. I’m sure it will sell millions just like the last ones.” Rosie said warmly. “Hope so.” “When it comes out come back on the show okay!” The guys all grinned and nodded. “Alright!” She turned towards the cameras. “More things to look forward to! Tickets for the upcoming tour this spring just went on sale TODAY. The boys put on an AMAZING live show. I caught them the last time they were in town. You don’t want to miss that.” Rosie picked up several CD cases and propped it them forward. “And of course till the new one comes out you can still get your Five fill by picking up any of the other albums. They are all in stores right now. They are all wonderful! Great songs! Love to listen to them! Play them all the time! Go out and get them if you haven’t already.” Putting the CD’s down she focused back in on her guests. “Gentlemen it is always a pleasure to see you! Always happy to have you here! Good luck with everything!” “Thanks for having us,” Abs responded, the other guys following similar suit. “Five everybody!” ************* “Welcome back! You're tuned into BBC Radio One, I’m Jamie Therkston, and for those of you who have just joined us… I’m sitting less than 5 feet away from the beautiful and talented Ms. Aliesa Montaine. Want to say hello again to the listeners?” “Hello!” “I can only imagine how jealous everyone is that I have you all to myself in an enclosed space!” “That’s right! It’s just you, me, and a microphone. Very S-E-X-Y!” The two started to laugh. “We REALLY need to get back on track here. My producers are giving me the evil eye over there in the booth. Better actually do my JOB…So let’s get back to what we were talking about earlier before that last music set. We talked about the album, we just played the single…so how about we go ahead and discuss how you have got your very own boyband member! A lot of girls have got dolls but you have the live version!” “You know I was wondering when you were going to bring him up!” Aliesa cracked shaking her head. “Of course you knew it was coming! It’s a big change since the last time you came by the station. You were single and now look at you! You’re married and everything…” “Yup. I’m all grown-up it seems.” “So what is the Mister up to while you’re sitting here with us in the studio?” “He’s actually took the redeye this morning to New York to do some promotions but he’ll be back tonight in London. I’ll be seeing him soon.” “You’ve been able to spend a lot of time together despite your busy schedules?” “We actually have. It’s just been really lucky. We both honestly believed that these first couple of months we’d barely see each other. But we’ve been able to see each other a whole lot. I’ve been traveling with him for the most part because my promotions schedule has been relatively the same. In fact, I was going to go with the guys back to New York today but I got a schedule change at the last minute and I ended up in London instead. So I had to come by and talk to you!” “Well thanks so much for coming by the studio us instead of jetting off to New York with Ritchie. I’m feeling privileged. Such a compliment! I’m getting all tingly!” “Well you know I love you Jamie!” Aliesa laughed. “And I’m so glad you did come by the studios! Let's talk about the fans? You were saying earlier how your fans have been nothing but supportive. Has it changed? How does it compare to the reaction you’ve gotten from the Five fans?” “Well obviously not everybody is ecstatic about the two of us getting together. But for the most part the fans have been extremely supportive. The Five fans have been wonderful to tell you the truth. Like this morning we I ran into some girls in the hotel lobby. They were just wonderful. They were offering congratulations and they were just extremely sweet and nice. And that’s basically how it’s been. Nothing really that negative.” “I heard your parents didn’t even know about the wedding until after the fact. How are your folks reacting to the fact their little girl is married?” “Well they’re still speaking to me if that’s what you’re asking.” Aliesa joked dryly, saying nothing further. The DJ laughed. Her own forced laughter found it’s way out on the airwaves soon after. “Were they surprised?” “Under the circumstances I’d say they were.” Jamie chuckled into the microphone. “My parents would have killed me!” “Well I can say they were upset about not being there for the wedding.” “I’d imagine…so are you staying long in London?” “Yes I actually am! I’m starting rehearsals for my first headlining tour in the next couple of days and my manager worked it out that I could rehearse here while Ritchie is doing some touch up work on the new album that’s coming out. I’m really psyched. I love it in London.” "I wish you could stay longer here in the studio but I know you have other engagements." "I do. Work, work, work. I wish I could stay and chat more." "You going to sign some stuff before you leave?” “Sure am.” “You heard it people. We’ll be giving away some wicked autographed Aliesa Montaine gear…maybe a copy of the new album, the single, some concert tickets…who knows! Your chance will be coming up after this commercial break. Keep the dial locked in on Radio One.” The on-air sign flicked off and Jamie pushed down his headset. “Hey Aliesa. Before you go would you mind doing some spots for us?” “Of course not. Never! Am I recording down the hall?” “You know it! Laura will lead you down there. Thanks for coming by again. Say hello to Ritchie and the rest of the lads for me will you?” Aliesa smiled. She seemed to be doing that a lot lately. Smiling. Giving Jamie a quick hug, she got up from her seat and was soon out the door. Walking briskly down the hallway she almost didn’t catch the greeting directed at her. But she heard it and she stopped. She wouldn’t have been able to ignore it. The voice was all too familiar and so was the face. Brown eyes met blue ones. “Christian?” Chapter
