On "You Never
Know": I was in Mexico with my family, and late one night
I was sitting on the balcony of our hotel room. I had an amazing
view of the ocean, and I just let my imagination run. I pictured
this meeting of two lonely people, both who are at different points of
their lives. At first I didn't want to incorporate Brian into the
story, I really just pictures two regular people...but then it just happened
to work out that way, and I really like how it turned out. Basically,
I wanted a story that brought what looked like two completely normal people
together, only to find out that they each had their own ghosts in the closets.
It just goes to show - you can't judge a book by its cover.
: I've been writing
for quite a few years now, and when I became a big fan of the Backstreet
Boys, in particular Brian Litrell, just a few years ago, I realized that
he and the rest of the Backstreet Boys were an amazing outlet for my writing.
It brought so many new plots and ideas to my head that my creativity rose
up to a whole new level. Now I just can't stop coming up with new
stories.
On "One True Friend": I
wrote this story after discovering the song “One True Friend” by Bette
Midler. I get a lot of my inspiration from songs, just trying to
come up with the story behind why the artist wrote the song, and it’s fun
for me to tie them into the Backstreet Boys. I’ve always been drawn
to the relationship between Brian and AJ, how they’re so contrary and how
their differences almost seem to draw them even closer together.
I’ve always loved the saying “opposites attract”, and that’s mostly where
this story came from.

On "Sillhouette"
: Not sure.
I just started with the living room scene and went from there. I
never 'plan' what I write, it just happens. This story was supposed to
be about 15 pages long. As you can
see, it didn't turn out that
way. My main aim was to write a story showing two people in a relationship
that appeared easy, but was actually far more complex.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
I enjoy writing fan fiction, but I also
enjoy people reading my stories.
I wish I could write more often. Living in Australia, I often feel
very far removed from the typical fan scene, I guess fan fiction is a way
for me to keep in touch, even if it is made up!

On "Advice": I
truly believe that being true to a character is really important when writing
fiction, and I guess that's what inspired me to write "Advice." It
was a challenge to get inside Nick's head and write what I think is really
in there. I wanted Nick to be as real as possible, and I think that
by showing a...darker...side of him, I was able to portary him in a different,
but possibly real, light. As long as there's the possibility
that what I wrote is true, I've accomplished by goal.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
Fanfiction gives me a chance to play. I
have at my disposal five amazing
characters who I can mold to be the
perfect Prince Charming or
a fantastic villain. Writing fanfiction gives me the chance to make
my writing a little more real. It's a challenge to try to portray
real people in fiction writing, but it's a challege I love. Plus,
what girl hasn't wondered how good Nick is in bed? Writing fanfiction
lets me find out. ;-)

On "Lucky":
This
was actually one of the few stories I wrote directly as fan fiction with
no plans to rewrite; I've been a fan of Abs Breen for ages, and I've always
thought he had rather an intense gaze. I guess he just sort of inspire
me.
On "Confession":
The main reason behind my writing this story was the Challenge at PLA (Pretty
Lies Awards). It asked for a story revolving around some sort of admission
about love, and rather than the usual secretly-in-love idea that such a
challenge would inspire, my mind went to a somewhat darker scenario.
On Writing Fan Fiction:I've
been writing for as long as I can remember, and when I get a story idea,
I write it first as fan fiction. It's like doing a dress-rehearsal, sort
of. If I like the outcome, I rewrite it legitimate fiction. If not,
it just stays as a fanfic.

On Writing Fan Fiction:
The thing I like the most about writing fanfiction is that I can make up
one idea and incorporate all of the other ideas that I have with the one
I started with. It lets me be in control.

On "Heart Without A Home":
This
story had an odd beginning. I was sitting at the computer one night,
and I just started typing, there was no pre concocted idea, no outline...I
hadn't even dreamed about it. I just typed the line "Spare some change
sir?" and the story seemed to begin writing itself. It was strange,
but I was sort of relieved. I had been having the worst case of writers
block anyone could have imagined. I'm still amazed at myself.
I had thought this story was just going to be a random rambling kind of
thing, something that would get rid of my writers block. I never
expected to get more than two chapters written, but it has turned into
my main focus. I have worked my butt off on perfecting this story,
and actually, I think this is one of the few things in my life that I have
ever done well. This story is a blessing, and sometimes when I go
back and reread it, I still can't believe its mine.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
I guess writing was something I was born being able to do, although I wouldn't
realize it until much later on in my life. My Mother is a writer,
and she even had a book published once, so I guess that's where I inherited
the knack for it. I never thought I could ever get into writing,
because I had always hated school, and especially hated writing assignments.
It wasn't until I discovered the wonderful world of fan fiction that I
actually considered writing a story. Several attempts were made to
start something, and each one failed. Just as I was about to give
up though, a lot of things started happening in my life that were making
me depressed. I was lonely, and at times, wished I were somebody
else. But that idea was crazy, how could I be somebody else?
The answer...I couldn't be...but I could write about other people...and
about things I hold dear to my heart, like Justin Timberlake and the Backstreet
Boys. I found writing was a great stress reliever. I didn't have
to be me when I sat at the computer. I could slip into my character's
life, and tune out the rest of the world. Thus, I began to write
a very long and drawn out story which I have yet to complete...needless
to say I thought it was great the first time I read it over. It was
my first real creation...my masterpiece... Now, a year later, I look back
at the seventy chapters I have written and realize how poorly written and
poorly structured it is, lol. What I'm really trying to say here
is that writing has changed me in a lot of ways, and now that I have developed
my skill I don't think I'll ever stop. I love Justin...I love writing,
and that is why I do it.

On "Best I'll Ever Be":
It
occurred to me one day that nearly every story I've written has had a happy
ending. A week or so later, I was in a serious funk about life in
general and as I sat, listening to my Sister Hazel CD, this song popped
on. A spark lit in the back of my mind and "Best I'll Ever Be" just
sort of wrote itself. I decided to go against my normal style of
writing and look at things from a different perspective. Often times,
I view Backstreet as five guys who have everything and don't know the meaning
of the word rejection. It was time for a change.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
In
simplest terms: therapy. Writing has always been my escape from the
real world for as long as I can remember. As soon as I sit in front
of my computer, there's no homework, teachers, parents, or chores. I can
create a fantasy world, which unlike the real world, is 100% controlled
by me. It's fun to concoct the perfect life with the dream career,
super-model looks, dream house and the perfect man. Using Backstreet
is just an added bonus because there's less focus on character build up
so I can have fun with the rest.

I was toying with the idea of writing something but wasn't sure what to
write or if I even wanted to attempt my first fanfic. The idea actually
came one night when I couldn't fall asleep and mind was wandering.
Little concepts kept on popping into my mind and I just had to get up to
write them down. It eventually ended up with whats here now.
On Writing Fan Fiction:

get out of my head.

On "Angel":
This
story came about after I read a paticularly "teenieish" msg on a fanfiction
board. It was all about the looks, it was all about the way they were "so
cool! they are, like, perfect!" and I wanted to slap the girl upside the
head and show her how unperfect people who have the "perfect" lifestyle
are (speaking from experience). And, then, this song came up on the random
list of probably 45 or so
songs, and it was like "Bingo!".
I sent the girl the story. I never
got a reply.
On"Bright Lights":
This
story came about in Frau Kalstads 2nd period 1st year german class... It
was actually something that came from the fact that everyone with contacts
in the class were dying because of the
stupid florecent lights. I'd
have this "he likes so-and-so, but will
never tell" thing going through
my head. Then I wrote out the end
"bright lights" part and...
yeah. it went from there.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
I
write fanfiction because sometimes I feel it's easier than making up your
own people. This way someone else out there could see who it's about and
go... OH! Hey, i know them! and read it... I write regular fiction too-
but this is different... It's my view, or my imagination, and other people
with like interests are reading it. (if
that made any sense at all)

On "It's A Bitch":
"It's
a Bitch" was a totally random story for me. I was watching Punk'd on MTV
one night, and I just thought, "Holy crap, I want to be one of those actors
and play pranks on famous people." And it just went from there. I like
writing comedy, so when I get a funny idea, I run with it. Sometimes it
turns out right, sometimes not so much. It's a gamble.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
I
write fiction because it's fiction.. Sometimes you just need a break from
your own life, and fiction is just that, whether you're writing it or reading
it.

On "Bouquet":
Bouquet
is actually the sequel to Deep
Waters, which you can find on my site
(shameless promo) but the storyline is really different and I promise you
don't have to read DW to understand it. Where DW was more of a drama-type,
Bouquet is definitely a love story. A pop princess. A member
of a boyband. Your typical cliche. But that doesn't mean they
can't find true love. I'm actually pretty proud of this story...I'm
happy with how it turned out. This story was written because DW had
left itself wide open for a sequel. While it had its own ending,
the thing between Nick and Britney was unresolved, which I took care of
in Bouquet. I really hope you like this story as much as I do.
Please give any feedback you can!
On Writing Fan Fiction:
Fanfiction
is a type of art. No actually, it's a type of writing, and writing
is a type of art. You follow my logic? Fanfiction is a way
of expressing myself, a way of letting myself drift into fantasy-land,
allowing myself (or rather, my characters) live the kind of life, the kind
of struggles, the kind of dreams come true, that I would love to experience
but probably wouldn't. It's kind of like a dream...except written
down...and you can control what happens. But mainly I write fanfiction
because it's fun. And for a few hours, or days, or months, I like
being able to tell Nick, AJ, Brian, Howie, and Kevin what to do.

There was a lot of Backstreet - Girlfriend backlash in the early days (ie,
1999/2000 when Millennium hit)
and I wanted to say my piece
without seeming preachy. Granted, it's a little late now, 4
years later and all... lol.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
I used to write fan fiction because I loved how people reacted to it; I
now write fan fiction because it isn't just writing a story about other,
real people - it's about making the characters your own and creating a
world over which you have total creative control. Basically, just
letting your imagination run
wild.. Who cares whether
it would really happen or not, it's what I enjoy as a passtime.

I always wanted to write something about a dancer and AJ; just to put an
edge on an anorexia angle, further developing conflict and internal pain.
I was unbelievably surprised when I found the lyrics; so I just used it.
The challenge finally provided some motivation for me to actually write
it.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
What I love about fan fiction: I love seeing my writing there, ready for
viewing. I love the feedback, knowing people have actually, really read
it and they have formed some sort of opinion about it. But there
are so many great aspects, and those are just a few :)

On what prompted her to
write her stories: It's been a while since "Choices" but I remember
wanting to portray a more mature and multifaceted Nick (where romantic
relationships were concerned).
Each story matures him a little
more than the one before it -- and attempts to show him at a different
stage of his life: That's not where my mind was when I was writing them,
but that's how they turned out.
On Writing Fan Fiction:
Plain and simple, it started out as a challenge to myself. I couldn't find
the type of story that I wanted to read so I sat down and tried to write
one. Working on that first story reintroduced me to a love of writing.

On what prompted her to
write"Soul Vacation":
Have
you ever seen Nick Carter up-close in a casual atmosphere ? I was
lucky
enough to do just that and
BAM, this story was born as a result. Of all of my fics it's probably the
one that took the smallest effort to write, it practically wrote
itself. It has no complicated storylines, no confusing subplots...and
yes, I know it screams for a sequel but I honestly haven't even thought
about that yet. Maybe the sequel will pop into my head the next time
I see him (a girl can dream...lol).
On "In Your Eyes":
Ever since my first fic I had people left
and right asking me to write
one about them. I personally like to identify with my main
characters so I don't feel comfortable writing about strangers but
I did however, promise my closest friends a story for each one of them.
I chose the titles from old songs I love and "In Your Eyes" was my first
effort. Just listening to Peter Gabriel's voice inspired the
storyline and just like with most of my stories it took off on its own.
I have to admit this one is a bit more sappy than my usual style
but then the story called for it. Besides, what girl doesn't enjoy
some sickly sweet romance every once in a while ?
On Writing Fan Fiction:
There
are only a handful of things that I find distracting enough to relax me
in this world...staring at the ocean, sleeping, yoga...but probably the
most theraputic one is writing. When I write I live in that story,
it's my parallel universe for the short while that I'm sorting it out in
my head and then getting it on the screen. Reading used to be my
escape, now it's writing...and who better to write about than my Boys :)

On "Something Numb":
My inspiration for this story was simply AJ. I'd been hearing a lot of
negitive things about him since everything with him had started and I thought
it'd be interesting to write a story from his point of view, him looking
at himself and knowing what others are saying about him. It's kind of like
my Intimate Series in the fact that he's talking to the reader and telling
his feelings and whatnot. I wanted a different perspective than what everyone
was seeing. Kind of like putting myself in his shoes, thinking what he
could possibly be thinking.
On Fan Fiction: What
I like best about fan fic is the fact that stuff that can't typically happen
in real life, can happen. It's nice to be able to minipulate the outcome
of events and make what you want to have happen, happen. Besides that,
it's just fun. It's cool to get caught up in a plot and cheer for the characters,
gives you something to relate to. I love to read it and write it! |
