Penny For Your Thoughts
By: Jess
“So why do you love me?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean why do you love me?”

Silence.

“Don’t tell me you can’t think of a reason!”

He laughs.

“You’re such a jerk you know that?”

She smiles.

“But obviously I’m a jerk that loves you.”

Pause.

“And why is that?”

“Why do I need a reason?”

“It’s just that…” She looks at her hands.  “You could have anyone and…”

“I don’t want anyone.  I want you.”

She raises an eyebrow and then laughs. Hard.  “Oh that was cheesy-even for you!  Don’t try to use that boyband charm on me.  It didn’t work when we first got together and it won’t work now.  Besides you’re evading the question!”

“What question?”

She sighs.

“What?”

She gives him a look.

“You know I love you.”

She stares at him blankly.

He points it out.   “I’m here aren’t I?”

She mentions the obvious.  “But for how long?”

He frowns.  “Why do you suddenly need a justification?”

Silence.

“I hate when you do that!”

“Do what?” she says confused.

He points.  “That face!  You know the one you make when you’re pretending that everything is fine when we both know you’re upset.”

“I’m not making a face.”

“You were!”

She sighs.

He sighs.

“I love you you know.”

“I know.”

Silence.

“How do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Make me feel like a complete jerk without yelling at me.  All you have to do is sit there and look at me and I feel like I’ve done the worst thing in the world.  You’ve got me saying stupid things right now just because all I can think about is how I need to make it up to you.  How I need to see you smile.”  He stares at her intently, grabbing one of her hands in his.  “I love that smile.  It keeps me going just knowing…”

She bites her lip.  Her eyes are dancing with a new glow.

“You’re doing that girl face now.”

“Girl face?”

“You know that smug look you girls get when you know you’ve won.”

She laughs.

“See!  You know I’m right.”

“I can’t help it.  You’re cute when you’re babbling…so you love how I smile?”

“Depends…am I forgiven?”

“Was I ever upset?”

He runs his fingers through his hair.  “You’re doing that girl thing again!”

She smiles.  A lopsided grin forms on his face.

“I love you.”

He blinks.

“I love you too.”
