Do not overreact. Do not overreact. That had been the intention of course. It was supposed to be. The whole idea of it, I was there- new plan, new guy. However, since my life was one big unintention… I ended up at Nick Carter’s door. But there really is a rational explanation for all of this. Really. Her name is BJ Carter. As fate would have it, Nick’s sister had just gotten back from LA. And let’s face it—she’s the only person right now who can understand where I’m coming from. Did you think I was the only victim of Brent and Nick’s rubber snake? BJ can relate to my situation - well she’s not in love with my brother or anything - but you know…the little sister big brother’s friend can’t date you thing? And with the ordeal of the other night, I needed some kind of rationalization for my brain. Cosmo was not helping. And I love Hannah and all, but when it comes down to it, a girl can never go wrong with another opinion. So…BJ was perfect in getting me out of this mess. “I don’t see the problem Lana.” Or not… I flung myself onto her sofa pillow. “You don’t think this is weird? He’s a Backstreet Boy.” BJ gave me a look. I rolled my eyes. “Forgoing the little obvious detail there about you being related to one.” I blew out a breath. “What would you do?” BJ just gave me another look. “Umm-go for it? If Brian ever asked me out, I’d so be there.” I raised an eyebrow. “Nick wouldn’t mind his little sister dating his best friend? What about the ‘rules’,” I air quoted. “My brother is a dim-wad. His opinion on my lovelife doesn’t count,” BJ stated flat-out. “Besides I wouldn’t trust Nick’s judgment on dating anyhow. I mean have you seen the kind of girls he goes out with? He can’t give me any shit about their stupid boy rules.” BJ made a face. “Have you met Stephanie?” I cracked a smile. Leave it to Bobbie Jean to put it into perspective. “She’s not that bad…” At my weak attempt of contestation, BJ rolled her eyes “Admit it Lana- You can’t stand her!” “That is not completely true…” I said trying to be fair. BJ’s shot me a look of disbelief. “AJ told me at dinner that when he asked her if she liked asparagus, she said she couldn’t understand how the French could eat snails. You know you were holding yourself back Lana.” I bit my lip, in an attempt to not laugh out loud at the remembrance of the incidence from the previous evening. “Alright, so maybe I did wonder to myself how she and Jake could be related…” “See!” I shook my head. “It doesn’t matter what I think BJ. I’m not dating her.” “But you’re wondering why my brother is?” “I did not say that, you did.” I flung the sofa pillow at her. “And I think we both know why your brother is dating her.” BJ grinned, “You know they’re not real.” I cracked up. “That was mean.” “But its true! She told my mom!” My eyes widened, and that was all it took to set us off into a giggling fit. One that only got worse when a certain tall, blonde, blue-eyed, boy named Nick happened upon us. “What’s up with you two?” Nick’s interjection only set us off even more, until both BJ and I were giggling so hard we were both clutching our stomachs, trying to stop. “Umm-nothing much,” I managed, coughing in between words, in a sad attempt to compose myself, which only made BJ laugh harder. “Just girl stuff.” “Yeah, umm… Lana here was just telling me about how great the date was the other night,” BJ added, stifling her smile. One perfectly shaped eyebrow arched up, as Nick glanced back and forth between his sister and I. “Really?” “Oh, she had a blast. I was telling her she should go out with AJ again, even though Brent is being an ass about it,” BJ expounded. At the mention, my elbow shot out, jabbing her in the side. An action that elicited an innocent grin directed my way from one BJ Carter as Nick’s gaze settled on me. “I can talk to Brent if you want,” he offered. “You know - let him know it’s cool. I do owe you.” Excuse me? “Lana doesn’t need his permission, or yours to date someone Nick,” BJ
cut-in before I could even part my lips to say anything, rolling her eyes.
“It’s not like you care if it’s cool with Jake to mess with his sister.”
“Whatever,” BJ challenged her brother. “If you like someone, you like someone,” BJ said steadily, holding her ground. “That’s not the point BJ.” Ignoring her brother, just like I do mine, BJ turned to me. “So you’re going to go out with him, right?” Licking my lip idly, I contemplated. And in complete honesty, with Nick standing right in front of me… The truth was… I still had no idea, but trust me - I was now more determined than ever to get there. 13.
